Chapter Twelve
Conrad
I look over the report my investigator sent to me. He's finally found Oscar; he's hiding out in fucking Canada. How the hell did he get there? I assumed he would take the money and start spending it, but the money is still sitting in its overseas account, from what he can tell. They have transferred nothing out, but that doesn't mean it won't be later.
Yes, Oscar's access to the money is damning, and then he runs away, making him look even more guilty. But I can't help but feel something isn't right here. Why hasn't he tried to reach out to anyone, not even Penny. You'd think he would try to claim his innocence to his sister. I know theyâre close.
I throw the papers to my desk, sitting back in my chair. My mind is turning to look for alternatives. Who else would it be? I have no fucking clue. I move my hands to the bridge of my nose and pinch, willing the headache to go away. I want to tell Penny I found her brother, but then what can we do? The money is still missing, but maybe if I heard what happened to him, it would give us more info. I told my investigator to message him, explaining that he wouldn't be arrested if he came back. As much as I want my money back, it's not worth it if Penny is going to get hurt. She's priceless.
Weâre only a few days away from the Preakness Stakes, the second race of the Triple Crown. It's only a week between the Derby and Preakness. Luckily, we have three weeks to rest and prepare for the last one. We'll need it. Belmont is the longest track of them all, and it's an actual test for horses and riders.
As much of a pain in the ass as Adam is, the horses and new jockey he hired have been doing well. They have been doing some smaller races and have been constantly in second or third place. Of course, winning would be ideal, but they still payout to the top three horses. Regardless of how well Adam is doing, I'm not going to keep him after this season. I can't get past his disrespect to Penny.
I stand up and stretch, having been seated in the same spot for hours. I take my side patio door to walk to the main barn. Penny is there, going through her trunk. After every race, she insists on unpacking and repacking herself. Making sure she and Opus have everything she needs. We leave tomorrow afternoon and have an eight-hour drive to Baltimore, where the Preakness is being held.
I walk into the barn and see the lineup of trunks ready to be loaded up into the trailer. They're all nicely packed and covered with the Stone Legacy Stables monogram.
"Everything is ready. The boys will load it later today; the trailer is still being cleaned." Burt comes walking up beside me.
"Where's Penelope?" I ask.
"She took Opus for a walk.
